Coming out of hibernation

Happy New Year! Yeah, I know, we're a bit late. Let me tell you why.

It was always planned that the beginning of January would be a time for us to recharge our batteries. We figured pretty much everybody would have all of the coffee they need for a few weeks and we'd be safe to come back in the middle of January without losing too much momentum. 

But at the end of December, Calvin identified that there was a problem with the roaster. It wasn't venting the fumes and smoke away properly. We quickly decided that we wouldn't roast any more until we had solved he problem, because there was a significant risk that any coffee that we would send out would be tainted. 

In a normal roasting operation, the roaster would probably get the part she needed within a day or two, would then fit it and everything would be hunky dory. But we were two full-time white collar workers, one of whom (me) was in the throes of working out how to look after two kids instead of just one. Also, to make things extra interesting, our roaster is a Chinese specimen for which the parts are not readily available.

The long and short is that it took two weeks to actually get to the roastery to begin scoping out the problem. Then, we barked up the wrong tree a number of times. We finally started down the right path and managed to order the right part, but then still found there was a problem. It turned out that the airflow in our vent was significantly reduced, so we had to sort that. 

And then we managed to break one of the temperature sensors and had to replace that! Finally, I headed to the roastery Friday afternoon and fitted the new temperature sensor. Everything heated up and cooled down ok, and I breathed a sigh of relief. Calvin did a couple of test roast batches and declared them good, and he then fulfilled some long overdue subscription instalments. Job done!

So - we're back! Again... All of our exciting 2021 plans that were on hold are back on again, and we have some great new coffees to release in the next month or so.
